Founded in 2006, FILMLAND MV is located in Schwerin and is primarily responsible for organizing FILMKUNSTFEST MV, the biggest film festival in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania. Each year the festival includes some 150 feature and short films presented in ten sections. It traditionally takes place in early May in Filmpalast Capitol in the heart of Schwerin, the state capital.
With as many as 18,500 visitors, FILMKUNSTFEST MV is one of the largest public film festivals in northern and eastern Germany. The festival has various juries comprised of film experts as well a jury of 12 young people that confer prizes with a total value of 40,000 euros.
For ten years now FILMLAND MV has taken on editorial responsibilities for an additional festival project, the AHRENSHOOPER FILMNÄCHTE, which takes place every year in November in the well-known Baltic Sea spa town Ahrenshoop.
FILMLAND MV gGmbH also coordinates the SchulKinoWoche MV, which takes place ever year in November, in collaboration with the joint organizer VISION KINO in Berlin and its partners, which include the federal and state agencies for civic education (BpB/LpB).
In January 2021 FILMLAND MV expanded the scope of its functions to include “strategic planning for cinema.” This entails, among other things, awarding the Cinema Culture Award (Kinokulturpreis) on behalf of the state government to movie theaters in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania that have distinguished themselves through special programming.
Beyond that, FILMLAND MV acts as a contact and lobbyist for cinemas in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania.
The FILMLAND MV gGmbH team organizes and performs its tasks in an office in Schwerin town hall.
