FILMLAND MV gGmbH, based in Schwerin, was founded in 2006 and is primarily responsible for organising the largest film festival in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the FILMKUNSTFEST Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Every year, it features around 130 feature-length and short films, presented in ten sections, and traditionally takes place at the beginning of May at the Filmpalast Capitol cinema in the heart of the state capital Schwerin.
With up to 19,000 visitors, the FILMKUNSTFEST MV is one of the largest public festivals in northern and eastern Germany. During the festival, various expert juries and a youth jury award twelve prizes with a total value of approximately 45,000 euros. Volker Kufahl has been the artistic director of the festival since 2014, following many years under Hasso Hartmann.
Together with the Ahrenshoop tourist board, Filmland MV gGmbH also organises the annual Ahrenshoop Film Nights in November, featuring a feature film competition and a special programme.
Furthermore, FILMLAND MV gGmbH coordinates the annual SCHULKINOWOCHE MV (School Cinema Week MV), which takes place at the beginning of November, together with co-organiser Vision Kino in Berlin and its partners, including the Federal and State Agency for Civic Education (BpB/LpB).
Until 2020, FILMLAND MV gGmbH ran FILMCOMMISSION MV on behalf of the MV Ministry of Economics. In this role, it supported numerous film productions and shoots in the federal state.
With the reorganisation of film funding in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, which was actively promoted and supported by FILMLAND MV gGmbH, it handed over this task to the new MV Filmförderung GmbH. In return, the state government entrusted it with the task of ‘strategic cinema planning’ from 2021 onwards.
Particularly during and after the pandemic, FILMLAND MV gGmbH became the central point of contact for cinemas in the federal state, organising industry conferences and launching the ‘MV Cinema Day’ in 2023.
Together with the annual organisation of the KINOKULTURPREIS (Cinema Culture Award), which FILMLAND MV established in 2019 for commercial and non-commercial venues in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the non-profit company brought together film and cinema policy expertise in a way that is unique in Germany.
Following a decision by the Ministry of Culture in 2025, the organisation of the Cinema Culture Award was transferred to MV Filmförderung GmbH and the task of strategic cinema planning was discontinued.
